Amazon ad costs, Google LSA bug: the Sept. 2 brief
Amazon's ad-auction lawsuit, a Google Local Services Ads bug, Reddit video billing, and LinkedIn cleanup put budget controls under pressure.

Ad buyers have two reasons to distrust a clean dashboard today. US regulators say Amazon secretly raised auction prices, while a Google bug separated some local ads from the business profiles behind them. Reddit also changed what counts as a billable video view, and LinkedIn intensified its fake-activity cleanup. The shared cost is weak measurement.
Amazon's auction faces a billion-dollar trust test
More than one million Amazon advertisers may have paid undisclosed surcharges, according to a lawsuit announced by the Federal Trade Commission on August 31. The FTC and 22 states allege that Amazon altered its search-ad auctions in 2019 and extracted tens of billions of dollars over seven years. These are allegations, not a judgment. Amazon denies that advertisers or consumers were harmed.
The business consequence lands before the court result. A bid is the most an advertiser offers for a click. If the auction can push the actual charge closer to that ceiling without another advertiser setting the price, a profitable bid can quietly become an expensive one. The FTC says Sponsored Products advertisers paid their full bid roughly 80% of the time in 2024, up from 30% to 40% in 2021.
Do not assume the platform's return figure proves the price was fair. Compare Amazon ad spend with contribution profit, the revenue left after the costs that rise with each sale, by product and week. Our owner's guide to marketing attribution shows the minimum source-to-sale chain. Sellers with thin margins should act first. Businesses that do not buy Amazon ads can ignore the account audit, but not the warning about auction opacity.
Your move
Google leaves some local lead accounts unlinked
Google confirmed on September 1 that it had identified a Local Services Ads bug and was working on a fix. In a public reply from Google's Ads Liaison, the company said the fault was unrelated to the platform's migration. Advertisers had reported profiles becoming unlinked and intermittent loss of account access.
Local Services Ads sit above or near ordinary search results for businesses such as plumbers and electricians. An unlink between the ad account and its Google Business Profile, the listing that carries the company's identity and reviews, can interrupt visibility or blind the owner to lead flow. That is a pipeline risk, not an inconvenience.
Affected businesses should avoid rebuilding accounts while Google repairs the fault. Record the last known lead count, test whether calls and messages still arrive, and compare the ad dashboard with the customer relationship management system, the software that stores leads and follow-up. The same principle sits behind our Google Ads budget-control checklist: platform reporting needs an outside record.
Reddit sells attention in 15-second units
Reddit launched a 15-second engaged-video-view goal worldwide in public beta on September 1. Under Reddit's definition, a short video qualifies when completed; a longer video qualifies after 15 seconds. Advertisers pay for those views, and automated bidding decides whom to reach.
This makes the media bill match deeper attention, but attention is still not revenue. A product demonstration may need 15 seconds to make its case. A simple offer may waste money paying for a longer view when six seconds already communicates the point.
Run the available split test only if video is already a serious budget line. Hold the creative and audience steady, compare six-second and 15-second goals, then judge qualified visits or sales rather than completion rate alone. Reddit's growing ad demand already makes downstream measurement essential, as our July analysis of Reddit pricing pressure explained.
LinkedIn raises the cost of fake reach
LinkedIn reported 46% more detected inauthentic activity in the first half of 2026 than in the previous six months. Its latest EU Digital Services Act disclosures cover enforcement against behavior such as artificial accounts, while LinkedIn has separately targeted automated comments and coordinated engagement groups.
For businesses using LinkedIn to find leads, fewer fake interactions should improve the signal inside reach and engagement numbers. The short-term risk runs the other way: automated posting or engagement tactics may lose distribution or trigger enforcement. A large comment count is worthless pipeline when the people behind it never buy.
Separate owned profiles from any automation vendor, document who can access each account, and measure LinkedIn by qualified conversations recorded in the CRM. The lead-generation topic page has the wider rule: count progress toward a sale, not activity around a post.
What to watch
- Watch whether Amazon changes auction reporting or offers advertiser relief. Either would change the value of historical campaign comparisons.
- Watch Google's Local Services Ads status before making account-level repairs. Duplicate changes can make diagnosis harder and lead flow less stable.
- Watch Reddit's cost per qualified visit during beta. A cheaper 15-second view is not a saving if fewer viewers reach the offer.
