Facebook gates links, Pinterest sells search: Sept. 18

Partner links appear below. Buying through one pays The Margin a commission and costs you nothing extra. How we make money.

Free distribution is getting a price tag. Facebook is limiting some business Pages to two link posts a month, Pinterest is selling ads inside visual search, and Reddit wants holiday budgets earlier in the buying journey. Each change raises the same margin question: are you paying for access, or for customers?

Facebook puts a toll on outbound traffic

Two link posts per month is the new limit appearing for some Facebook Page managers. Social Media Today reported the expanded test on September 17, days after Meta launched paid Meta One plans for businesses. Publisher Pages are exempt, but other professional accounts in the test need a subscription to publish more links.

Meta's own plan page places links in Facebook and Instagram posts and Reels inside its Advanced tier, priced at $49.99 monthly per asset. An asset means one Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp business presence. That makes the bill multiply for a company with several brands or locations.

The trap is paying to restore reach that barely existed. Meta's Q1 2026 content report says only 1.3% of US Facebook Feed views contained an external link. For an owner, this is a conversion question, not a posting-rights question. If organic Facebook links rarely produce tracked sales, the restriction costs less than the subscription.

Your move

Record visits, qualified leads, and sales from unpaid Facebook links for the last 90 days. Price the affected Page separately, then buy access only if the contribution profit from those links clears the monthly fee. Do not multiply one unproven subscription across every location.

That calculation needs revenue tied back to its source. Our small-business attribution setup shows the minimum chain from visit to closed sale.

Pinterest sells the search before the keyword

Pinterest opened Visual Search Ads to eligible advertisers in beta across all its ad markets. The September 17 company announcement says paid products can appear in visual-search results and Pin close-ups, where a person is examining an image rather than typing a conventional query.

That moves paid placement closer to product discovery. A furniture seller can meet someone exploring the look of a room before that shopper knows the product name. Pinterest also added Priority Products, which lets advertisers tell its automated Performance+ campaigns which items deserve more attention, plus self-serve A/B tests. An A/B test compares two campaign versions to see which one produces the better result.

New inventory deserves a test budget, not money pulled blindly from proven campaigns. Separate visual-search traffic, hold the offer and product set steady, and compare cost per completed order with existing Pinterest placements. Clicks are especially weak evidence here because visual browsing can produce curiosity without purchase intent.

The same discipline applies across automated platforms. Our Meta Advantage+ budget analysis explains why giving a system more control increases the value of clean sales data, while the landing-page structure guide covers the page that must finish the sale.

Reddit pulls holiday research ahead of the sale

Reddit published its 2026 small-business holiday report on September 17, built around how shoppers research gifts and when those conversations develop. The official report page promises category data, seasonal behavior, and campaign examples. Reddit's figures are advertising material, so treat them as planning signals rather than independent proof of return.

The useful money lesson is timing. If buyers use community discussions to narrow choices before Black Friday, a campaign launched only for the discount weekend enters after the shortlist is built. Late demand is expensive demand: more advertisers compete for the same ready buyer, and a deeper discount can erase the margin that paid media was meant to create.

Businesses with a genuine holiday purchase cycle should compare early research traffic with later sales using consistent campaign labels. Businesses without seasonal demand can ignore the calendar entirely. A platform's holiday guide is not a reason to manufacture a promotion. Our lead-magnet offer framework is useful when early visitors need a reason to return without an immediate markdown.

What to watch

  • Watch whether Facebook expands the two-link limit beyond the current Page test. A broad rollout would turn organic distribution into a recurring cost line.
  • Check Pinterest's visual-search results after a full buying cycle, not after the first burst of clicks. The budget decision belongs to completed orders.
  • Track when holiday-assisted sales first appear. If early Reddit visits never return as revenue, the research story does not earn more spend.
